True Hope in A Hopeless World
Bible Text: “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.”
(Hebrews 7:19-20).
SERMON OUTLINES
Ship anchors are heavy metal devices designed to secure a vessel to the sea floor, preventing it from drifting under the force of wind, tides, or currents. The anchor digs into the seabed to create an initial mechanical hold, while the long, heavy anchor chain—typically three to seven times the water depth—adds tremendous holding power by lying along the bottom and generating friction. Yet even the strongest anchors can fail. In natural disasters such as tsunamis, violent storms, hurricane‑force winds, or powerful tidal surges, the sea can lift the heavy chain off the bottom, breaking the friction and causing the anchor to drag. History gives sobering examples. The Royal Charter, a luxurious steam clipper traveling from Melbourne to Liverpool, was caught in the “Royal Charter Gale,” the most violent storm to strike the British Isles in 1859. Under the immense load, her anchor chains snapped. The ship was driven onto the rocks, broke apart, and sank—taking the lives of more than 450 people! Even modern vessels, equipped with advanced GPS anchor alarms and satellite tracking, are not immune. In April 2026, the MV Mariana, a 145‑foot (44-meter) cargo ship, was caught in Super Typhoon Sinlaku near the Northern Mariana Islands. The ship lost stability, capsized, and eventually floated upside down.
Hope is the anchor of the soul. Yet many people place their hope in things that cannot withstand the great storms of life—hope in themselves and their good works, in wealth, in loved ones, in friends, in religion, and in countless other human supports. However, when life brings storms such as job loss, the death of loved ones, serious illness, family collapse, moral or financial scandal, relentless anxiety, fear, or depression, these anchors fail. They cannot hold. What about your hope—your soul’s anchor? Truly saved, born‑again believers have a sure and steadfast anchor in the Lord Jesus Christ, the almighty Creator and Saviour (Hebrews 6:19-20). He alone can hold them fast through every storm of life. Do you desire such a hope—such an anchor for your soul?
I. THE MEANING OF THE HOPE OR ANCHOR IN JESUS CHRIST FROM HEBREWS 6:13-20
1. God made promise to Abraham with His oath to make him a great nation, and through his Seed (Jesus), the whole world would be blessed by their faith in Him (Gen 12:1-3; 22:15-18; Heb 6:13-14).
2. Abraham had waited and endured patiently, and he obtained the promise (John 8:56; Heb 6:15).
3. By God’s immutable promise and oath, we may flee for refuge to lay hold on the hope before us (Heb 6:18).
4. Our hope, like an anchor of the soul, is sure and steadfast, which enters into the holiest where the Lord Jesus Christ, our great High Priest, is ever living to make intercession of us and save us (Heb 6:19-20; 7:25).
II. HOW TO HAVE TRUE HOPE IN THIS HOPELESS WORLD
1. Acknowledge that there is no true hope in this world (Matt 24; Eph 2:12; 1 Thess 4:13).
2. Repent and come to the Lord Jesus Christ, our Refuge and Salvation (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Heb 6:18).
3. Trust and hope in the Lord Himself alone (Ps 39:7; Jer 17:7, 17; 1 Tim 1:1).
4. Read, trust, and do God’s Word, which is our Hope and the foundation of our Hope (Ps 119:114; 130:5).
5. Treasure the Lord’s presence and keep a constant fellowship with Him (Lam 3:24; Heb 6:19-20; 1 John 1:7).
6. Live a sanctified life while waiting for the Coming of the Lord Jesus (Titus 2:13; 1 John 3:2-3).
7. Be ready to share our blessed Hope with others (1 Peter 3:15).
III. CONCLUSION
You and I are living in a hopeless world — a world that is sinking deeper and deeper into moral and spiritual darkness. Even if there may be brief moments of peace, more natural disasters, troubles, and wars will come. In such a world, you must ask yourself, What is my hope? Who is my hope? And what exactly am I hoping for?
If your hope is not the Lord Jesus Himself and God’s Word alone, then you do not possess a sure and steadfast anchor for your soul — especially concerning your salvation. Many professing believers attend church and are active in ministry, yet if they do not have a constant fellowship with the Lord and live according to His Word to keep themselves pure, their hope cannot hold them in the storms of life or stand for them on Judgment Day! What about you? May the Lord graciously help us experience our true Hope and firm Anchor in Him — and may His love constrain us to share that blessed Hope with others in this hopeless world until He comes. Amen. HN.
